I rush out my front door, grabbing my things as I go. I am trying to be sure I don’t forget anything. I am always in a hurry and today is no exception. I sprint off the front porch, down the cobblestone walk and toward my car which is parked in the driveway.

I reach for the car door and notice something peculiar. Someone has taken bailing twine(yes the kind used in a hay bailer) and tied it to my side view mirror. The coarse tan cord stretches across the top of my gray car from the drivers side view mirror to the gas tank on the opposite side above the back tire.

I must say I am very curious as to the reason my car looks like a half wrapped redneck birthday gift. I go back inside the house and call my youngest for a little chat.

I see a very sheepish look on his face as he approaches me. ” I would like to talk to you,” I say in a kind voice. He relaxes a little and says,”Okay.” I ask “Did you leave a rope on my car today?” He twist his wrist toward his body and extends his fingers as he states confidently, “Yep.” “What is the rope for?” I query.

His body language begins to change as he rolls his eyes to the sky and raises his hands only to lower them again as if in disbelief. He seems to be expressing his shock at the fact I didn’t automatically know why he would do something so wonderful. He finally retorts”Well, in case your car runs off the road sometime and it turns over in a river…I could pull you out by following the rope.”

Awwwww. He is concerned for my safety. He is expressing his love for me, but I didn’t understand that. All I saw was a dirty, rough rope on my clean car.

Many times this happens between God and man. God is trying to protect us. But, we won’t listen because He delivers it in a way we are not willing to accept or don’t seem to understand.

God’s actions are always good. His goodness is demonstrated in one part because He left us the Bible. But we don’t want God to talk to us through His written Word. Many don’t want to study it. Many no longer believe prayer works.  We don’t want to take the time. We want an easier way.

Which would you say is easier…wondering around in the dark or seeing clearly the path. Of course you would say seeing clearly. But, we willingly  choose the wondering in darkness because we refuse God’s protection as we refuse His means of communication. God’s protection is available but we will have to follow His plan to receive it.

“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.”
